What sets Taoist funerals apart is the elaborate ritual structure. Taoist wakes in Singapore typically last longer — three to seven nights — and involve specific ceremonies on particular nights, including paper offerings, prayers, and rituals conducted by Taoist priests. The flower arrangements are an important backdrop to these ceremonies, and a well-presented condolence flower stand at the entrance signals respect to the family.

These colours represent purity, peace, and the transition of the soul — and they are what the bereaved family expects to see.

Do not send red flowers to a Buddhist funeral. In Chinese culture, red is the colour of celebration — weddings, new year, auspicious occasions. Sending red flowers to a Buddhist wake is considered deeply disrespectful, regardless of how beautiful the arrangement looks.

Most Chinese Buddhist wakes in Singapore are held for three to five nights. The funeral flower stand is the most common tribute — displayed at the entrance or around the casket. Flowers are placed at the entrance, around the casket, and near the altar where the deceased’s portrait is displayed. If you are attending in person, a white condolence bouquet is appropriate to present directly to the family.

Unlike Buddhist wakes, where the casket is typically kept open for viewing, many Christian and Catholic services in Singapore keep the coffin closed. Hindu funeral flowers in Singapore are different from Chinese funeral flowers in one important way: colour is not restricted. Bright marigold orange and yellow arrangements are traditional and appropriate — these are celebratory colours that honour the soul’s journey, not symbols of mourning. White flowers are also acceptable.

Marigolds are the most traditional flower at a Hindu funeral. Jasmine garlands are also commonly used. If you are unsure what to order, a bright orange and yellow funeral flower stand or a fresh marigold bouquet is always appropriate.

The most important thing to know about Hindu wakes in Singapore is the timing. Most Hindu families observe the tradition of cremating the deceased within 24 hours of passing. In traditional Islamic practice, elaborate flower displays are not a central part of the funeral ceremony. Simple, understated arrangements in white and green are acceptable and appropriate — they are a gesture of condolence, not a centrepiece of the service.

The most appropriate arrangement for a Malay Muslim wake is a simple white flower stand placed near the entrance of the home or venue — not near the body itself. The deceased is typically wrapped in a white shroud and is not displayed in an open casket, so a casket spray is not appropriate.
